Implants: All the Information You Need

Image

I want to have a Breast Augmentation, what size should I be?  What type of Implant would fit my body type?

These are some of the frequently asked questions my patients have.  Lest start by the beginning, so you’ve made up your mind, you want to look and feel better,  you book your appointment with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

I sit down with the patient in the consultation, and talk about the way you want to look, and whether you’re a good candidate for this procedure. So the first thing we look at is sizing.  The next step is to look at pictures of before and afters, and look at what parameters we are dealing with size-wise.  The next step would be the examination and measurements of the patient’s chest, look at the different options whether the patient needs just an Augmentation or a Lift with Augmentation (usually for patients that had children, and have “ptosis” or excess skin and tissue that “hangs” would consider the option of Lift with Augmentation.”

Scars

The next step would be to see where the patient wants the scar to be, whether the patient wants the scars to be around the nipple, or under the base of the breast.  For patients that need a Lift with Augmentation, the amount of scarring will usually be more than for those patients that just need an Augmentation.  They will have to decide whether to have a “T” shape scar, or have just scarring around the nipple (this option might not be optimal for all patients, it always depends on the severity of the “ptosis” they present).

Choosing an Implant

I work with two types of Silicone Gel Implants: Sientra and Natrelle, and with Natrelle Saline Implants.  Silicone Gel Implants were approved by the FDA in 2012, with the latest in Implant technology to be developed in 2013 by Allergan, the company that produces Natrelle 410 highly cohesive anatomically shaped Implant.  Sientra Implants were the ones to give the “gummy bear” description to the newest generation of Silicone Gel Implants.  I personally like Sientra Implants since they are made with more viscous gel, or high strength silicone.  In addition, Sientra Implants come in smooth, textured, moderate and high projection versions, as well as round and shaped styles.  These features provide the patient a way to correct very small and /or sagging breasts resulting from pregnancy or weight loss.  You will be able to look and feel all these types of Implants: the smooth, versus the textured Silicone Implants, the moderate vs. high projection versions, and the round vs. the shape styles.

Feeling the Implants in your hands, and having a chance to try the Implants out is crucial to determine which Implant is right for you!
